Meet the Sports Therapist

Who Am I?

Hello, my name is James Mason!

I graduated from the University of Worcester with a 1st Class Honours in Sports Therapy at the start of 2023. Straight after, I spent the summer designing a brand to launch myself into the Sports Therapy world - This came in the form of Restore & Revive Sports Therapy.

Since the young age of 4, I have led a fairly active lifestyle - partaking in numerous sports with the main ones being: Football, Taekwondo and Badminton as well as being a frequent gym goer. With this being said, I'm sure you can guess I've had my share of injuries with the worst being patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). However after learning relevant theory and rehabilitation methods, I was able to rehabilitate my own knee back to better than ever!

Throughout the duration of University - I studied how to assess, identify and rehabilitate injuries caused by both sport and everyday life. The 3 years allowed me to gain extensive knowledge on treatment options such as electrotherapy, sports massage, maitlands mobilisations, sports taping and many more to help eliminate pain and restore function previously reduced by injury.  Following university, I have gained new skills such as dry needling, cupping and further rehab methods.

Most importantly, owning a sports therapy business and working in some established clinics as a sports therapist has increased my experiences and shown me a lot of new techniques, ways to manage injuries and get the best out of my clients!

My Experience

Restore & Revive Sports Therapy

Restore & Revive Sports Therapy has been offereing sports massage and injury services since September 2023. As well as setting up at sports events such as 113 cotswolds triathlon & cotswold big swim offering post event massage.

Since starting up, we have helped numerous clients with a variety of MSK issues from: Ligament strains, Meniscus, Arthiritis, Low Back Pain and countless others.

We also have some partnerships with gyms and sports associations across swindon offering discounts to select members.

Sports Massage

Starting in college, studying an Extended Diploma Sports and Exercise Science, I started practicing in sports massage in 2019. Leaving me with a level 3 qualification before starting Univeristy. Which then quickly upgraded to a level 4.

Since then, I have had an extra 3 years in Univeristy as well as external work mastering Sports Massage. The main bulk of experience coming from practicing in a massage clinic just after COVID-19 regulations were lifted as apart of the University.

After graduating at the beginning of 2023, I have been offering sports massage to clients with a mobile service as well as setting up for numerous triathlon and swimming events to help athletes recover  after competing.

First Aider + Placement Student

Current: I currently work with the STFC Academy for first aid purposes, utilising my first aid and trauma skills.

Placement: Throughout the 2022/2023 season, I worked closely with the First Team alongside the Lead Physiotherapist and also with the Under 18's academy team.

During my time at the club, my main roles were to provide sports massage throughout the pre-season, pre and post training sessions to allow for the players  to recover quicker and perform at a higher standard.

Other duties included: Injury Assessments, First Aid during training sessions, Rehabiliation work both in the gym and on the field.

Injury Assessments & Treatment

External Clients would book into the University Clinic weekly, which meant a whole variety of injuries and conditions have been presented on the plinth infornt of me!

From ACL reconstruction, post sugery from broken feet/prosthetic toes, anterior labral tears, tennis elbow, lower back pain and a whole lot more. I have assessed, treated and rehabiliated injuries from all over the body and different ranges of severity.

Lead Sports Therapist

The last year of University meant I was assigned with a University sports team alongside the Placement and Trauma modules.

I was gifted with the Mens Basketball 1st Team with many of the players playing in the Worcester Wolves NBL team. Medical screening and SCAT5's were completed prior to the season beginning.

We offered all of the players pregame services including: Sports Massage and Sports Taping to get them ready for the game ahead and reduce the chance of injuries occuring. As well as providing pitchside First Aid at home and away games.

Throughout the season numerous injuries were seen instantly, treated and rehabilitated across the season. This included serveral lateral ankle sprains, a tibia contusion, shoulder impingements and a few others.
